Koenji Awa Odori

Photos from various Koenji Awa Odori events over the years - a mixture of portraits and the matsuri procession itself. Awa Odori is a street festival that originated in Tokushima Prefecture in Shikoku but has been celebrated in Koenji, Tokyo for over half a century now. The event sees crews (ren) gather from across Japan for two days during the last weekend of August to perform choreographed dances through the streets to the traditional Japanese sounds of shamisen, taiko drums and shinobue flutes.
