The Tulou of Fujian
An exploration of the Tulou communities in Fujian, China. Tulou are a type of fortified earthen building, often circular in shape, sometimes square, traditionally used as a communal residence by the Hakka people. The earliest examples date back to the 13th century, with the last ones being built in the mid 1900s.
Located mainly in mountainous areas that are experiencing depopulation and increasing levels of disinterest in living in such buildings full-time, the Tulou are slowly being abandoned and falling into disrepair, although a handful are being maintained and used as tourist attractions. During this trip with Tev from Ici Japon we explored a vast number of them and got to know the people that still call them home.
