Tokyo no Matsuri

Matsuri are native Japanese festivals of sacred Shinto origin.

A matsuri symbolizes a community’s unity with itself and the Shinto gods. Sometimes large and boisterous, sometimes small and solemn – matsuri are rooted in the lives of Japanese society. Sometimes adhering strongly to tradition, sometimes watered down by modern commercialism – they can be found in small villages and big cities alike up and down the country, each with its own unique flavour.

Tokyo no Matsuri is a work in progress comprising of images shot at various festivals around Tokyo. All images shot on Fuji film on a selection of 35 mm cameras. Colour follows black and white.
