The Edo Psychiatric Hospital   Location: Japan

The Edo Psychiatric Hospital allegedly closed in 2001 due to accusations of financial fraud and a string of human rights violations – there were apparently up to eighty unexplained deaths within the hospital walls over the years. If one thing is clear from online sources it is that this building has a dark and somewhat controversial history.

The top two floors of the building consist of rooms full of old beds, up to 6-10 beds crammed inside each one. Smashed windows meant the curtains are torn and the rooms are strewn with debris. The basement consists of a row of five identical concrete cells, equipped from floor to ceiling with iron bars at one end and solid metal doors at the other. This is where they kept the “difficult” patients, the ones that weren’t allowed contact with others, in what was close to solitary confinement. The thought of humans having to eat, sleep and exist down there is a difficult one to wrap ones head around.
